Last week, I had the absolute pleasure of attending my first NALP Annual Education Conference in Hollywood, Florida. While I had previously attended the Newer Professionals Forum in a slightly colder Philadelphia two months ago, this conference felt like a big step into the major leagues of law firm recruiting.
Getting to meet so many members of the NALP community reinforced the exceptionally collegial nature of this industry. Despite being technical competitors, I found it inspiring how much knowledge sharing and genuine friendship exists within the recruiting world. Viewing it all from the perspective of someone outside of a law firm, but who works across both regions and firms, I was struck by how unique this industry is and how long-lasting these professional and personal relationships can be.
A particular highlight was seeing Eva Wisnik present her Achieving Your Next Level of Success program. The room had a great buzz, and I admired the attendees’ willingness to open up about personal challenges they face at work and at home. While much of the conference’s content focused on supporting attorneys, Eva’s session focused on the internal barriers that can hold professionals back. She spoke about identifying goals that are truly aligned with your values and, more importantly, recognizing and challenging the limiting beliefs that often get in the way of reaching them. Working through those internal challenges is not easy, but I came away from the session with a clearer understanding of how critical that work is to do.
Overall, I left the conference with a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper appreciation for being part of this industry. I also spent time thinking about how we can continue to provide value to our clients. One way we have done this is through conducting salary surveys across different legal markets to enhance transparency and share meaningful industry insights. Over the past year, we have completed surveys in the Bay Area, Texas, Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York. I’m including those surveys here and encourage anyone reading to share them with others who may find them useful.
More than anything, I’m looking forward to continuing the conversations that started last week and building on the relationships that make this industry so special. It was a great first conference, and I know it won’t be the last!
