Happy Summer! What will you do to make yours fun?
I love summer, but I am keenly aware of how the weeks fly by each year. This summer, I am committed to being more present and making conscious choices as to how I spend my time having fun.
Lately, I’ve been leading a lot of Time Management trainings for attorneys and business services professionals. Listening to my audiences, I created a brief assessment to gauge how much time we spend worrying each day. “Worry-time,” as I coined it, are the activities we default to distract ourselves when uncomfortable tasks or feelings arrive.
Worry-time might include:
-
Mindless scrolling on social media
-
Watching the news or a TV show you aren’t even enjoying
-
Online shopping for things you don’t actually need
-
Procrastination disguised as “taking a break”
When I run anonymous polls, participants report that they spend on average 2-3 hours EVERY DAY on worry-time!
When we default to worry-time, we don’t actually recharge or have fun. We just lose time.
What if we took one hour away from our worry-time each day and instead spent it on fun activities? Maybe something you enjoyed as a kid. Playing outside, being at the beach, or making art. For example, if you have a habit of scrolling on social media before bedtime, have a novel you’re excited to read on your night table and swap your phone for the book.
We all have a little more control over how we spend our time than we think we do.
My summer fun activity is floating in my pool on the days I’m home and feeling deeply connected to the trees and sky. What do you want your summer fun activity to look and feel like?
