Business Development Manager, IP

For the Chicago, Detroit, or D.C. Office of a Premier Am Law 200 Firm

Responsibilities include:

  • Work with attorneys in the Intellectual Property practice on the pursuit of new client opportunities, expanding relationships with existing clients, contributing to cross-selling efforts and elevating the public profile of the group;
  • Manage business development initiatives and projects and develop effective plans and processes that align with Firm strategy;
  • Develop effective proposals and pitch presentations, including the creation of customized materials;
  • Manage overall legal ranking process for designated departments;
  • Manage the development and implementation of public relations and internal/external communications strategy and action plans that are aligned with attorney business plans;
  • Provide strategic coaching to individual lawyers and select “pitch teams” to increase the effectiveness of business development approaches.

Qualifications include:

  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing (or related discipline); JD or MBA preferred;
  • 2+ years' experience in a marketing or business development function at a law firm or professional services firm; prior experience supporting IP attorneys;
  • Ability to effectively work within the Firm environment and engage the departments, practice groups and individual attorneys to increase the value delivered to clients and the Firm;
  • Knowledge of business planning and targeting programs at the department, practice group and individual partner level;
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, set priorities, deliver results and advise at all levels of an organization with a matrix structure;
  • Experience with marketing information systems and use of technology-driven communication experience; social media experience is highly desirable.
